On continue nos interview avec les Australiens de Northlane. On parle de leur show du Hellfest, du changement de chanteur ou de la difficulté d’être Australien pour tourner dans le monde. G.S : Première question: c’était votre première fois au Hellfest. Comment vous sentiez-vous avant le concert et comment vous sentez-vous maintenant après avoir joué ?

M.B : On est arrivé super tôt aujourd’hui, donc on était crevés ce matin, mais bon, le concert était génial, on ne s’attendait pas à ce que ce soit aussi dingue que ça. Le Hellfest a tout donné ce matin, c’était énorme ! Maintenant on a toute la journée devant nous pour prendre du bon temps et aller voir d’autres groupes.

J.S. : Ouais, on a été vraiment surprise par toute l’énergie ambiante, on est super content du concert, et là on va aller voir Slayer! (*rires*)

G.S. : Le groupe a subi quelques changements de composition, dont un changement de chanteur. Il a dit dans son message d’au revoir qu’il travaillerait à nouveau avec vous, est-ce que c’est le cas, travaille-t-il avec vous sur les compositions de chansons ?

J.S. : Je crois pas non. (*rires*)

M.B. :Je crois qu’il doit encore faire de la musique d’une façon ou d’une autre, mais seul de son côté il me semble.

G.S. : OK, donc il ne travaille plus avec vous maintenant ?

J.S. : Non, il ne bosse plus pour Northlane depuis qu’il a quitté le groupe.

G.S. : OK! Ça n’est jamais simple de remplacer un chanteur dans un groupe, les fans risquent d’être hyper déçus parce qu’ils « aiment sa voix » ! Donc, comment ça s’est passé pour toi, Marcus, quand tu as intégré le groupe, les fans ont bien réagi à ton arrivée ?

M.B. : Tu sais, au début je pense qu’il y a toujours des gens qui seront sceptiques ou inquiets de la situation, mais assez vite nous avons vu pendant les concerts et après avoir sorti le premier disque avec moi comme chanteur, que les réactions étaient très positives. Et on peut le voir pendant les concerts, les gens sont  à fond, et c’est ça qui compte, tant que les gens viennent et passent un bon moment, tout va bien !

G.S. : Et pour le reste du groupe, est-ce que le choix de Marcus était évident? Est-ce qu’il a pu s’intégrer rapidement ?

J.S. : Et bien, tu vois, c’était y’a un petit moment, mais on a fait un concours pour trouver le bon chanteur, et quand on a vu Marcus, on a tout de suite su qu’il serait parfait. Et je n’ai jamais regretté une seule seconde ce choix. Il correspond totalement au groupe, c’est un de nos meilleurs amis et il a fait un boulot incroyable, c’est l’un des meilleurs chanteurs du moment !

G.S. : Ouais, je suis tout à fait d’accord. Pour choisir un nouveau chanteur vous avez fait passer des auditions mais vous avez dit aussi aux gens d’enregistrer des reprises de vos chansons sur YouTube. C’est plutôt inhabituel ! Et c’est une façon de faire que beaucoup de groupes adorent, qu’avez-vous à dire aux groupes qui disent « Oh c’est une super façon de trouver un nouveau chanteur ! » ?

J.S. : En fait, je pense que nous avons toujours réfléchi à chaque chose que nous faisions en tant que groupe, et on essaye de penser en dehors du cadre, par exemple notre dernier album Mesmer, nous l’avons sorti sans prévenir personne, on a aussi un « chat-bot » (un robot de conversation) qui parle à nos fans sur notre site, personne n’avait jamais fait ça non plus ! Donc oui, on prépare, on anticipe et quand on cherche un chanteur, le plus important c’est d’avoir tout essayé, et d’écouter tous ceux qui ont une voix intéressante. J’ai écouté plus de 2 000 personnes pour trouver la bonne !

G.S. : C’était ma prochaine question : N’était-ce pas trop difficile de trouver la perle rare dans cet océan d’audition ?

J.S. : En fait non, ça n’était pas si difficile. On savait que c’était lui quand on est tombé dessus.

G.S. : Vous avez écouté sa voix et vous vous êtes dit « c’est lui » ?

J.S. : Oui.

G.S. : Votre popularité est à son apogée, entre autres grâce aux 2 derniers albums, et aux bonnes critiques qui ont suivies. Quand le Hellfest vous a demandé de venir, comment avez-vous réagi ? Parce que le Hellfest a une bonne réputation en Europe, mais on ne sait pas s’il est autant connu en Australie. C’était une bonne opportunité pour vous ?

J.S. : Oui, je connais le Hellfest depuis très longtemps. Je me revois en train de regarder des vidéos de Lamb Of God qui jouaient ici quand le festival était encore petit, avant qu’il soit ce qu’il est maintenant. Quand j’ai appris qu’on le ferait, j’étais aux anges, c’était un véritable honneur. On est super contents de jouer en France, c’est génial d’être ici !

M.B. : Je ressens la même chose. Ça fait partie des festivals que tu regardes toute ton adolescence sur YouTube, alors faire l’ouverture de la grande scène était énorme, c’était un honneur comme tu l’as dit.

G.S. : Même si c’était tôt, vers 11h du matin, il y avait un paquet de monde à la grande scène. Qu’est-ce que ça fait de voir cette foule-là rien que pour vous si tôt le matin ?

M.B. : J’avoue qu’on ne savait pas trop à quoi s’attendre en y allant, on se demandait si les gens viendraient ou pas, mais juste avant qu’on joue, les gens ont commencé à arriver et c’était dingue de voir tant de gens si tôt et en plus le dernier jour du festival. On était impressionnés, c’était énorme !

J.S. : Quand on joue dans de grands festivals et que je vois tant de gens nous regarder, ça m’émeut énormément, et ça me fait chaud au cœur parce qu’on s’est battu pour en arriver là et pendant longtemps, donc pouvoir enfin faire des choses comme ça, c’est incroyable.

G.S. : Vous venez d’Australie, est-ce que c’est compliqué de faire une tournée, niveau coût, décalage horaire à cause des trajets, ou vous êtes-vous habitué depuis le temps ?

J.S. : Je crois que c’est plus difficile pour les groupes australiens que pour les autres, parce que nous venons d’une île isolée, pas très grande, et c’est dur de se faire connaître en Australie, et il faut en passer par là et gagner de l’argent avant de pouvoir voyager en Europe. Pour exemple, ça coûte 20 à 30 000 euros pour un groupe australien de juste venir faire une tournée. C’est vraiment dur, mais au final il y a tellement de groupes géniaux qui viennent d’Australie, car ils ont dû bosser un max pour arriver au son parfait et être au top de leurs capacités avant de pouvoir aller dans le monde entier, comme Thy Art Is Murder, Parkway Drive, Ocean Grove, Karnivool, ils sont si talentueux car ils ont dû travailler encore plus que les autres.

G.S. : Vous en parliez jute avant, vous avez sorti votre album Mesmer sans prévenir, pourquoi ce choix de faire une surprise et de ne pas faire de promo avant ?

M.B. : Eh bien, je pense qu’on voulait faire quelque chose de spécial, comme un cadeau à nos fans. On a pas touché terre ces 2-3 dernières années avec Northlane, et ça nous a semblé être le bon choix. Et ça a super bien marché ! Les gens pourront écouter l’album comme nous souhaitons qu’ils l’écoutent, en entier au lieu d’avoir une ou 2 chansons puis la totalité. C’était cool que les gens puissent l’écouter de cette façon. Et cerise sur le gâteau on a eu des retours géniaux sur l’album.

J.S. : A chaque fois que nous sortons un album nous essayons d’innover. A chaque fois nous avons essayé de faire différemment, et cette fois-ci on a pensé que c’était le bon choix que de faire une sortie-surprise vu qu’on ne l’avait jamais fait et que personne ne s’y attendait. En plus nous n’avions aucune pression vu que personne ne s’y attendait, personne ne pouvait se faire de faux espoirs sur ce que serait le disque et rien n’a fuité, on a pu le sortir quand et comme nous le voulions. Et le must c’était que dès l’instant où nos fans savaient qu’il était sorti, ils pouvaient l’écouter en entier, ils pouvaient aller sur Spotify ou n’importe où pour l’écouter instantanément et j’ai trouvé ça cool.

G.S. : Vous avez une carrière longue, beaucoup d’albums. Est-ce difficile de créer une set list de seulement 30 minutes, avec toutes les chansons que vous avez ?

M.B. : Ouais, carrément. Il y a tellement de chansons qu’on aime jouer, et toutes les réactions positives à nos nouvelles chansons nous donnent envie de les jouer aussi mais il est évident qu’il faut choisir parmi toutes celles de notre discographie, celles qui font partie des préférées de nos fans. C’est dur parce qu’on est tous attachés à des chansons différentes qu’on a envie de jouer, mais avec un set si court on est obligé de se limiter.

G.S. : Ma dernière question est “que peut-on vous souhaiter à l’avenir”?

M.B. : Euh… Et bien je sais pas, on a le Euro Festival dans quelques semaines, ensuite on va au Canada pour le festival Intervals et c’est juste… Désolé j’ai les fils qui se touchent (*rires*) ensuite on va en Amérique du Sud pour la première fois et c’est énorme! Mais on devrait revenir pour la fin de l’année, on est sûr à 100% ! On a vraiment hâte !

G.S. : Oooh c’est un scoop! Ok, de façon plus personnelle, que pouvons-nous vous souhaiter, santé, bonheur, plus de travail avec Northlane, plus de tournées avec des groupes incroyables ? Que voulez-vous vraiment ?

J.S.: Je veux juste que les gens écoutent la musique que nous faisons avec un esprit ouvert et de l’amour les uns pour les autres.

G.S : First question : it was your first time hear at Hellfest. How did you feel before the show and how do you feel now that you’ve played ?

M.B : We got in super early today, so we were feeling very tired this morning, but yeah, the show was great, we weren’t expecting it to be as mental as it was. Hellfest really brought it today, it was such a great time ! Now we have the rest of the day just to hang out and watch some other bands .

J.S. : Yeah we were really surprised at how much energy there was, we’re very happy with the show, and now we get to watch Slayer ! (*laughs*)

G.S. : The band has had a few changes with the lineup, including a change of singer. He said in his goodbye message that he would work again with you, is it the case, is he working with you on the composition of songs ?

J.S. : I don’t think that’s right (*laughs*)

M.B. : I think he still might do some other musical stuff down the line, but it’ll be on his own I think.

G.S. : Ok but he doesn’t work with you now ?

J.S. : No he doesn’t work with Northlane since he left the band.

G.S. : Ok ! So it’s not easy to replace a singer in a band, it can be a huge disappointment for the fans because « yeah I love his voice » !. So How did you react when you came into the band Marcus, and do you think the fans reacted well to your arrival?

M.B. : You know, I think initially there was always going to be people who were sceptical or worried about what was going to happen, but very quickly we saw from a few shows and even after having released the first album with myself, the response has been so good ! And we can see it at shows, like, people are so into it, and that’s really the only thing that matters as long as people are still coming along and enjoying it, it’s great !

G.S. : And it the band, was it a no-brainer to choose him, was he completely in the band the first few days ?

J.S. : Well you know it was a long time ago now, but we ran a competition to find the right singer, and when we came across Marcus, we knew he was just perfect straight away. And I’ve never regretted that decision for a moment I think. He fits into the band perfectly, he’s one of our best friends and he’s done an incredible job, and he’s one of the best vocalists in the game !

G.S. : Yeah, I agree. To choose the new singer you launched auditions but you said that people had to record covers of your songs on Youtube. It’s kind of unusual ! And this way has been praised by a lot of bands, how do you respond to these other bands who say « oh that’s a great way to choose a singer ! » ?

J.S. : Well I think every move that we made as a band has always been very carefully calculated, and we often think outside the square, I mean for example with the last record we put out, Mesmer, we surprised-released it, and we have an automatic chat-bot that talks to our fans on the internet, and no one had ever heard of that either ! So yeah, we think forward, we think ahead and when it comes to looking for a singer, the important thing was that we didn’t leave one stone unturned, and everybody who had a voice worth hearing we would listen to it. I listenned to over 2000 auditions for that, to find the right guy !

G.S. : That was my next question : was it not too hard to find the perfect guy in the ocean of these auditions ?

J.S. : Well no, it wasn’t really. We knew he was perfect as soon as he came along.

G.S. : You listenned to the voice and said « he’s the man » ?

J.S. : Yep.

G.S. : Your popularity is exploding, especially thanks to the two last albums, and the good reactions that followed. When Hellfest told you you could come, how did you react ? Because Hellfest has a good reputation in Europe, but we don’t know if it’s as big in Australia as what we see here in Europe. Was it a good thing for you ?

J.S. : Yeah, I mean, I’ve know about Hellfest for a very long time. I remember watching videos of Lamb Of God that were playing here when it was a very small festival, before it became what it is today. And I found out we were doing it, I was over the moon, I felt honoured. And we love playing in France so it’s great to be here !

M.B. : Yeah I feel the same way. It’s one the those festivals you grow up watching on Youtube, and opening the main stage was a blast, it was an honour, as you said.

G.S. : Even if it was early in the morning, around 11 am, there was still a huge amount of people in front of the main stage. How does it feel to see this big crowd here just for you even this early in the morning ?

M.B. : Yeah, we weren’t quite sure what to expect leading into it and even before we played, we were a bit worried about people turning up or not, but in that time before we played people just slowly came along and it was crazy to see that many people there especially this early, and especially for the last day of the festival. Very overwhelming but in the best way, it was great !

J.S. : When we do these big festivals and I see that many people watching us it makes me very emotional, and it really warms my heart because we’ve fought so hard to get here and for so long, that to finally be doing stuff like this is incredible.

G.S. : You’re from Australia, is it really hard to go on tour, in terms of cost and jet-lags because of the travels, or are you kind of used to it now ?

J.S. : I think Australian bands have it harder than most other bands, because where we come from is a very isolated place, it’s not very big, and it’s hard to make your name in Australia, and you have to do that and make money before you travel to Europe. Like, for an Australian band to come here it costs 20 to 30 000 euros, just to do a tour. It’s very hard, but what happens is you have all those amazing bands coming out of Australia because they had to work so hard to make their sound perfect and get as good as they could before they could take to the rest of the world, like Thy Art Is Murder, Parkway Drive, Ocean Grove, Karnivool, all of these amazing bands they’re as good as they are because they had it so much harder.

G.S. : You said it earlier, you dropped your last album Mesmer kind of from out of nowhere, why did you decide to drop it like this by surprise and not do some promotion before hand ?

M.B. : Well, this time around I guess we wanted to do something special as a gift for our fans. It’s been a crazy ride that Northlane has been through over these past 2-3 years, and it just felt like the right thing to do. It’s worked in a really amazing way ! People will get to hear the album exactly how we wanted them to hear it, in full not just a couple of songs and then the whole thing. It was really cool that people could listen to it exactly how we wanted them to hear it. On top of that it’s just been crazy the responses we’ve had about it.

J.S. : Every time we release music we try to do it differently. Every time we’ve released an album we’ve done something different, and we felt like this time the right thing to do was this surprise-release because we’d never done it before, and we knew people wouldn’t expect it. And there was no pressure at all on us because no one knew we were recording, no one was able to create an expectation of what the record was going to be, and it didn’t leak or anything, we got to release it how and when we wanted to. And I think the most special thing about it was that as soon as our fans knew that it was out they could listen to the whole thing, they could go on Spotify or wherever and listen to it straight away, and to me that was really cool.

G.S. : You have a long carrer, a lot of albums. Is it hard to conceived a set list for only 30 minutes of show, with all the songs you have ?

M.B. : Yeah, definitely, there are so many songs we love playing, and even the reactions we’ve been getting for these new songs really makes us want to put a lot of that into it, but obviously we have to go back through the catalogue and pick out some of the other songs that are also our fans’ favourites. It’s really hard because we all have different songs that we all cling to and really want to play, but when you have these shorter sets you can only do so much.

G.S. : My last question is what can we wish you for the future ?

M.B. : Umm… Well I don’t know, we’ve got the Euro Festival run for another few weeks, then we’re heading over to Canada with the Intervals, and it’s just… Sorry I just had a brain explosion (*laughs*). And then we’re going to South America for the first time as well, which is outrageous ! But yeah, we should be back by the end of the year hopefully, we’re 100% confirmed ! So yeah, we’re really excited about that.

G.S. : Oooh scoop ! Ok, and more personnally what can we wish you, health, happiness, more stuff with Northlane, more tours with incredible bands ? What is it that you really want ?

J.S. : Well, I just want people to listen to the music that we make with an open mind and love each other.
